KEEP PACE

HOW IT WORKS

In short, the Keep Pace app is simple and easy to use. It allows you to estimate your finish time at the click of a button. Currently, it operates without the use of GPS but this feature may be added in the future as an alternative user option.

After downloading the app and agreeing to the Terms of Service, explore the app and get a feel for how it navigates. Following this, choose between the GRIND PACE (Grouse Grind), CRUNCH PACE (Coquitlam Crunch), or RACE PACE (5K, 10K, 1/2 Marathon, Full Marathon) mode.

Once you select your event, choose between Just Grind, Just Step, or Just Race - these are the casual modes - or the Beat Your Best mode, which allows you to chase your previous best time.

Next, when you're ready go, hit the START button at the beginning of your chosen race/trail. To see your Estimated Finish Time along the way, press corresponding markers within the app as you reach various markers throughout your race/trail. Finally, press the FINISH button at the end, save your race if you choose, and share your time!

Note: For the Coquitlam Crunch, the app only has options for the beginning steps (437/457). Once upgrades to the complete trail have been made over the next couple of years, a Full Crunch mode will be added to the app in sync with the new corresponding markers.

GET STARTED

After downloading the app to your phone, you'll be prompted to click the "Get Started" button. By doing so you're entering into agreement with Keep Pace's Terms of Service. Once you press this button, this screen won't be see anymore unless the app is installed again.

KNOW YOUR SETTINGS

The settings log is easy to navigate as the user only has the Unit or Mode to make changes from.

Unit:

This allows the user to change between Km and Mile units during their race. It's important to note that changing units will only effect the Half and Full Marathon as these races are often marked with both Mile and Km markers along the way.

Changing the unit will change the buttons within the Half and Full Marathon modes displaying K for Kilometers or MI for Miles

Furthermore, any races saved will be recorded in the selected unit.

Mode:

The user can choose between Regular or Pro mode.

Regular Mode allows for the pause/resume button to be utilized whenever the user likes

Pro Mode disables the pause/resume button during any race (as seen below), only allowing the reset button to be used. This provides a more realistic finish time by disallowing the option of stopping the clock at anytime.

CHOOSE YOUR RACE

Choose between three main races: GRIND PACE, CRUNCH PACE, & RACE PACE

The Grind Pace works for the famous Grouse Grind trail, the Crunch Pace works for the beginning steps of the Coquitlam Crunch, and the Race Pace can be used for any 5K, 10K, 1/2 Marathon, or Full Marathon road-running race.

Each option has a casual mode and a more competitive mode to choose from. See below for more details.

GRIND PACE

Choose between JUST GRIND or BEAT YOUR BEST.

JUST GRIND: This is the casual mode with no racing against the clock.

BEAT YOUR BEST: Within this mode, you can select a previous best time that you've logged and race against the clock. As you press the marker buttons within the app it will display your estimated finish time as well as prompt you to pick up your pace or keep going as you are.

NOTE: The Grouse Grind only has 3 markers along it's path: 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4. When you reach each marker on the trail you can press the corresponding button within the app to estimate your finish time.

Once you're all set up, hit the start button within the app and Keep Pace!

CRUNCH PACE

Choose between 437 STEPS (LEFT) or 457 STEPS (RIGHT).

Both sets of steps are near the beginning of the Coquitlam Crunch just above Lansdown Dr. The 437 STEPS (the newly renovated old steps) are located on the left and the 457 STEPS (the new set of stairs) are located on the right.

NOTE: A full crunch mode will be implemented following the completion of the trail upgrades, including signs/markers.

After selecting the 437 or 457 steps to challenge, choose between JUST CRUNCH or BEAT YOUR BEST.

JUST CRUNCH: This is the casual mode with no racing against the clock.

BEAT YOUR BEST: Within this mode, you can select a previous best time that you've logged and race against the clock. As you press the marker buttons within the app it will display your estimated finish time as well as prompt you to pick up your pace or keep going as you are.

NOTE: Both sets of the Coquitlam Crunch steps are marked every 25 steps. However, the app records your pace at every 50 steps (50, 100, 150, 200, 250, etc . . .). When you reach appropriate markers on the trail you can press the corresponding button within the app to estimate your finish time.

Once you're all set up, hit the start button within the app and Keep Pace!

RACE PACE

After selecting the RACE PACE  mode, choose the specific race that you're entering:

5K, 10K, 1/2 MARATHON, FULL MARATHON

Next, choose between JUST RACE or BEAT YOUR BEST.

JUST RACE: This is the casual mode with no racing against the clock.

BEAT YOUR BEST: Within this mode, you can select a previous best time that you've logged and race against the clock. As you press the marker buttons within the app it will display your estimated finish time as well as prompt you to pick up your pace or keep going as you are.

NOTE: 1/2 Marathon and Full Marathon races often have both Km and Mile markers. Within the settings menu, you can select your Unit preference for your race.

5K and 10K races are always recorded in Kilometeres.

Once you're all set up, hit the start button within the app and Keep Pace!

TIMER BUTTONS

START

To begin the timer in your chosen race, press the start button, which is located at the bottom of your screen below the "Estimated Finish Time".

To finish your race and officially stop your time, press finish button, which is located at the bottom right at the end of your race's marker buttons.

PAUSE, RESUME, RESET

When the timer is running you have the option to pause your race, resume your race after pressing pause, or reset the race if need be.

These buttons are the rectangular buttons located in the middle of your screen as seen above.

Note: when you change to "Pro Mode" in the settings, only the reset button can be used.

MARKER BUTTONS

Marker buttons are located at the bottom of your screen in your timer. They will appear once the START button is pressed at the beginning of your race.

BASIC INFORMATION

The marker buttons are the same size for each race mode but they differ based on units and distance for each race.

During your race, when you reach a certain marker such as 1K within a 5K event, press the corresponding button within the app to display your "Estimated Finish Time" just above the markers.

Marker buttons can be pressed repeatedly as many times as you like. Doing this won't change your overall time but it will change your "Estimated Finish Time" every time it's pressed.

SWIPE LEFT, SWIPE RIGHT

To find the exact marker you wish to press, simply scroll left to right or right to left by swiping your finger in the marker button area.

GRIND PACE (GROUSE GRIND)

The grouse grind has 3 markers along the trail not including the START/FINISH:

1/4, 1/2, 3/4

Within the app the marker buttons for the GRIND PACE are displayed as seen below:

CRUNCH PACE (COQUITLAM CRUNCH)

Currently the CRUNCH PACE mode only functions for both sets of the Coquitlam Crunch steps. A FULL CRUNCH mode will be implemented in the future following the completion of trail upgrades.

Nonetheless, both sets of steps are marked every 25 steps to keep you aware of how close you are to the finish.

Within the app, marker buttons are set up to estimate your finish time every 50 steps as seen just below:

RACE PACE

This mode is the most versatile as it can be used for any road-running race around the world. If you've every entered a race before you know that distance markers are set up along the way as you go to let you know where your at in proximity to the finish line. Within the app, marker buttons correspond to the distance markers set up on your race's course.

Every mode within the app is set up by default to track your race based on Kilometers as the 5K and 10K races typically only use Km markers along the course. Marker buttons in the RACE PACE are displayed as seen below:

1/2 MARATHON & FULL MARATHON

Due to the 1/2 Marathon & Full Marathon races having a greater distance, many events have both Mile and Kilometer markers set up for participants.

Subsequently, the Keep Pace app makes it possible for you to change Units, which only applies to these to the Marathon events. As such, marker buttons are displayed in either Km or MI as seen below:

Note: Once you start your race you cannot change units midway, the Unit you use needs to be decided before your event begins.

FINISH & SAVE

When you reach the finish line of your race, press the FINISH button within the app. A "SAVE" button will then appear. When you press this button an Activity Log box will show up and you'll be asked if you'd like to save the race. By clicking "YES", your race will then be saved in the activity log.

Below is an example of how to save your race using the GRIND PACE:

1. Press "FINISH"

2. Press "SAVE"

3. Select "YES" in the Activity Log box . . .

Note: This process works the same for any race you choose.

ACTIVITY LOG

As seen just above, the Activity Log stores your saved times for each mode. The date, finish time, and average pace are logged. Up to 10 races can be saved for each mode.

To view all your saved times for specific race distances or trails, simply click on the desired race. This will take you to a specific page for that race where you can view previous logged races. See below for example:

SHARE & EXPORT

Once you've saved your race you can share and export your race times within the activity log. To do this, click on a specific race event in the Activity Log's main page. This will lead you to your saved races for this event.

By pressing the share button, located on the upper right area of your screen, a drop down menu will show as seen above.

From this menu you can choose which platform you'd like to share your races to.

Note: we're currently working towards improving the share option to make the app more social media friendly and to improve the overall Keep Pace experience.
